Ask LSOP # 42 - Can I use silicone lube with condoms?

Ask LSOP # 42 - Can I use silicone lube with condoms?

Knowing how your lube will interact with condoms or dams is an important part of practising safer sex.

Is silicone lubricant safe to use with condoms?

Yep! In fact, most lubricated condoms are packaged with silicone-based lubricant. Oils and oil-based lubes, on the other hand, cause latex or polyisoprene condoms to break down rapidly.

People ask this a lot in the stores, and it's likely because they remember that silicone-based lubes are incompatible with... something or other.

Silicone and silicone/water hybrid lubricants shouldn't be used with toys made of silicone, as even the small amount of silicone lubricant on condoms can cause irreparable damage to a silicone toy. That's why we sell unlubricated condoms and condoms packaged with water-based lubricant- so if you're using a condom and a We-Vibe at the same time, or you're condom covering a toy you don't have to compromise your toy or safety.

So, in summation:

Silicone lube and condoms? Totally fine!

Oil and condoms? Don't do it! Oil melts latex!

Silicone lube and silicone toys? Also no!

Water-based lube? Goes with everything.

If you're looking for a handy breakdown of material/lubricant compatibility, Eudaimonia Sexuality Seminars has this chart which you absolutely should print out and reference during sex.
