Ask LSOP #27 – When is a cock ring too tight?

Ask LSOP #27 – When is a cock ring too tight?

Our resident penis-haver and expert speaks to a common question about cock rings- how tight should they actually be?

How do I know if a cock ring is too tight?

First things first, IF IT HURTS/CHANGES COLOUR ITS TO TIGHT! Listen to what your body tells you. Another indicator of a cock ring that’s too tight is that the penis itself will feel colder to the touch than normal.

There are a few different types of cock rings, all with a different purpose. Because of this, the restriction they offer and the precautions one should take when using them varies from toy to toy. For instance, a ring that’s only for show would be naturally looser then a toy meant to trap blood in the penis. I’ll give you a quick breakdown of the main styles of cock ring available. Keep in mind that this list is far from comprehensive and that there are hundreds of different types of rings to choose from.

Restrictive

Often the most basic looking of all the styles of rings, these are the type that most people picture when they think of a cock ring. Sometimes they have handles to help get them on and off, as since they are designed to trap blood in the penis they should fit snug. Swelling of the veins in the shaft and engorgement of the head is to be expected, but remember, if the penis hurts, turns a funny colour, or it starts to get cold, take the ring off right away and get a bigger size! It may take some experimentation to find what size and material works best for you and your body. Many of the restrictive cock rings can be purchase in a set with a few different sizes, or are adjustable for a more custom fit.

Posing or display

These don’t offer much in terms of practical sexual use, but rather are used to create a different aesthetic for the wearer. They can be used to accentuate the testicles and/or penis, depending on the build. As they are sometimes worn as a decoration in and of themselves, these types of rings are sometimes very stylized, and come in neat materials like wood, stone, metal, plastic, and leather. They can be tight or loose, depending on the make, but typically these rings are not meant to be restrictive.

Vibrating

Vibrating rings primary purpose is to hold a vibrator in position to stimulate the wearer, their partner, or both simultaneously (it's worth noting that bigger, strategically-placed vibrators are more effective at stimulating erogenous zones than smaller ones). They often will have a snug fit to help support the bulk of a vibrator, but are not always designed to restrict blood flow. They come in all shapes and sizes and are usually made from stretchy silicone or TPE/TPR.

Cock slings

This type of penis accessory is meant to go around both the cock and balls, the ‘sling’ part presses down against the perineum, offering prostate stimulation from the outside. These do need to be a little tighter to achieve the desired effect, because if it's to loose the ring might not press hard enough onto the perineum. You have to take into account the size of testicles and erect penis when trying to work out sizing.
